News from the South

On 28 November 2019 the new expedition ship Magellan Explorer set sail from Punta Arenas for Antarctica. This is the first Chilean-built expedition vessel, custom-made according to the latest Polar Code specifications. She is ideal for small Antarctic air-cruises. On its inaugural voyage, Magellan Explorer is captained by Alexey Zhalazasniuk and Mariano Curiel is the Expedition Leader.

Magellan Explorer has capacity for 73 passengers for air-cruises to Antarctica accommodated in seven categories of accommodation, including dedicated single cabins. All cabins except Porthole cabins feature private balconies. All double cabins except two have two twin beds that can be configured as one king-size bed. All other cabins have two twin beds that can be configured as one queen-size bed. All cabins feature a wardrobe, individually controlled heating system, a sitting area, and a private bathroom with shower.

The ship features a glass-enclosed observation lounge and presentation room with state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment, a spacious and stylish dining room, a well-stocked bar, a library, a meeting room, a gym, a sauna, and a medical clinic. The forward-facing observation deck leads to the bow of the ship, which is accessible to guests to offer proximity to marine wildlife. The ship has a fleet of 10 Zodiac boats that are well suited for disembarking and wildlife watching.

 

Antarctic Air-Cruises on the Magellan Explorer start at just £4,834 pp for a 6 day/5 night itinerary.  These itineraries fly from Punta Arenas to King George Island, saving one and a half days sailing across the Drake Passage each way. Similar itineraries of 8 days/7 nights start from £11,285 pp. Longer expedition trips which cross into the polar circle cost from £16,600 per person for 10 days/9 nights. The Magellan Explorer also offers 15 day/14 night  itineraries which combine the Falklands and South Georgia, from just £8050 pp.
